Seattle Seahawks
Kai Films founder Derek Johnson contributed to the Seattle Seahawks’ 1990s throwback uniform commercial as gaffer and producer, with additional production support as the shoot’s technical demands evolved.
The concept
The spot announced the return of the team’s 1990s throwback uniform by sending a player through a period sitcom world and onto the field in a continuous transition. The production included a full four-room studio build and a deliberately layered 1990s visual style.
The lighting challenge
The scale of the set and the planned movement required extensive coordination. Derek brought in Derek Klein of Olympic Studios Seattle as a key lighting technician. Together, with support from Mike Astles, the team managed approximately 45 fixtures and a large collection of modifiers across the build.
Outcome
Directed by Studio 89’s Madeline Down, the spot functioned as a micro-short. It screened at several film festivals, won a Bronze Clio Award, and supported the best-selling jersey reissue campaign in NFL history.
